The full colour matrix is available for all grades. When colour grading, the predominant colour of the pearls is the first colour named, then the less dominant colour or colours. If the pearl is mainly green with a blue undertone, it is known as a Green Blue pearl. The pearls are then graded into brights and subtles or pastels.

The pastels have been compared to impressionist style paintings with a more subtle colour palate. Brights and pastels suit different skin types and eye colours.

The incredible natural lustre of the pearl is the internal radiating glow created by the light reflecting on the crystals that make up the nacre. The quality of the nacre is reflected in the lustre of these beautiful gems. Blue pearls have a naturally high lustre due to the structure of the nacre.

The surface of the pearl is another important factor influencing the value of a pearl. A pearl is a natural product created by a living being made up of thousands of layers of randomly secreted conchoilin and nacre. It is therefore no surprise that most pearls contain natural characteristics in one form or another which do not necessarily detract from the overall beauty of the pearl.
